Department of State Announces Changes to
Most Visa Application Fees

The U.S. Department of State published a Final Interim Rule in the Federal Register on March 29, 2012 amending the schedule of fees for most visa services, including nonimmigrant visa applications, border crossing cards and immigrant visa applications. The effective date of the new fees is April 13, 2012. Fees collected on or after this date, will be subject to the new fees. According to the Department, the fees are being changed to cover the actual cost of processing nonimmigrant visas, and to support expansion of overseas facilities, and additional staffing required to meet increased visa demand.

Although the fees for most employment-based nonimmigrant visas will go up from $160 to $190 per applicant, the fees charged for E-1 Treaty Trader Visas and E-2 Treaty Investor Visas will go down from $390 to $270 per applicant. The fees for B-1 and B-2 visitor visas will go up from $140 to $160. A complete list of the changes to the visa fee schedule can be found in a Department of State press release at: http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2012/03/187114.htm
